The Diamond Energy Female Midget AAA Wildcats swept a road weekend against the Battlefords Sharks in their first league action in three weeks.

To kick off the weekend, the Wildcats edged the Sharks 4-3. Swift trailed 3-2 in the third period before a pair of goals in the last half of the frame gave the Wildcats the win.

"We worked really hard, we were extremely happy with our work ethic and our compete, but our execution was bad from start to finish in all honesty," admitted Wildcats head coach Terry Pavely. "We weren't connecting on our passes, sometimes it was someone missing a pass and other times it was a pass right on the stick and somebody wasn't picking it up."

Pavely added that the win may have been sloppier than usual due to Battlefords' style of play, as well as the Wildcats' inability to implement their style of play consistently.

"We didn't really stick to our gameplan. They work really hard, but they just kind of play a little bit chaotic at times. We kept saying on the bench that we've got to play with structure, but we kind of got sucked into just running around."

Goals in the game came from Crystal Wale, as well as two from defenceman Ryleigh White, and one from fellow blue-liner Taylor Kirwan.

"Three of those goals were generated from the blueline - they were just good shots, kids that got the puck on their stick, got rid of it pretty quickly," Pavely said. "We did have really good traffic. That's probably the thing that we did very well - we were willing to go to the front of the net."

Amaya Giraudier faced 18 shots, stopping 15 for the Wildcats, who performed much more steadily on Sunday.

Swift shut out the Sharks in the second game in a 4-0 effort.

Baylee Kirwan scored the lone first period goal for the Wildcats, although the game could have gotten out of hand in the first frame.

"We gave up a couple chances in the first period, but after that we really locked down pretty well in the D zone," said Pavely. "We were very good in the offensive zone. It was 1-0 after the first, and with the quality scoring chances we had, it probably should have been a minimum 3, maybe 4-0."

"We went through a little lapse in the second period of about five minutes, but we weathered the storm. That's what you have to do. We've talked about that before. There are going to be times where other teams are going to take it to you," explained Pavely," But then the last ten minutes of the second we were really good."

Trista Labarowski scored with 9:24 and 7:18 left in the second period, and Baylee Kirwan added her second of the game with 1:10 remaining in the middle frame to close scoring for the game.

Swift tightened up defensively in the third period, eventually outshooting the Sharks 39-26. Giraudier performed well on Sunday, stopping all 26 shots she faced.

The theme for the weekend perhaps was secondary/well-distributed scoring, as leading scorer Taylor Lind (48 points in 24 games) wasn't among the five different players finding the back of the net.

"That was probably a big part of our success - they did a very good job on Taylor Lind. Every time she got the puck they were really getting on her. They really matched up some players against her, and they made sure they had someone always on her. When that happens it does open up the ice for some other people. It was really good to see that we had a number of people contribute."

"We've talked about that from the beginning of the year - some of our young players are pretty skilled. It takes a while to get used to the pace, the speed, and the compete level in our league. Now that they figured it out, we're seeing some of the results."

However, a notable benchmark for Lind who notched single assists in each game over the weekend - the 16-year-old forward moves into first all-time in Wildcats scoring with her current 106 points.

The Wildcats next host the Notre Dame Hounds in their final home game of the regular season on Wednesday night at Fairview West.

Pavely spoke on the tough, rewarding test on the horizon for his team.

Puck drop is 8 p.m. between the Wildcats and Hounds.
