A local boy who grew up watching the Swift Current Broncos got a chance to play for them on Saturday.

Stewart Valley's Jordan Wittman suited up in a 4-1 loss to Medicine Hat after getting called-up from the Midget AAA Home Hardware Legionnaires.

Wittman played a few shifts in the first period and saw his ice diminish as both teams shortened their bench. He was held off the scoresheet in his debut.

The 16-year-old has 28 points in 26 Midget AAA games this season.

"I thought my year has gone quite well actually," Wittman said. "Getting pucks to net, getting a point here and there... doing well."

Wittman has worked on his strength over the last year.

"I've gotten much stronger and I've been using it more to my advantage this year," Wittman noted. "Just out muscling and out working them."

The Broncos are still short healthy bodies and may need him again tomorrow as they host Lethbridge at 2pm. Levi Bews, Chance Lund, Josh Derko, Brent Benson and Shea Howorko are all out injured. Brycen Martin is at the U17 tournament and Eetu Laurikainen is playing for Finland at World Juniors.

You can hear the New Year's Day game on The Eagle 94.1 FM with The New Pioneer Co-op Home Centre Broncos Hockey at 1:30pm.
