The Western Major Baseball League (WMBL) is getting rebranded.

The league announced Saturday morning that starting at the beginning of the 2019 season the new name of the league will be the Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL). The name change comes after the WMBL Board of Governors voted early this May.

WMBL President Kevin Kvame had this to say about the change in a news release.

“We are excited about the new name, in that it will highlight the fact that the League’s footprint lies entirely in Canada. We are a baseball showcase for Canada and are proud to bring in fans and players to celebrate our beautiful country. Being in Canada gives us a unique advantage to provide great experiences to not only our homegrown talent but visiting players as well. The same applies for the fans and community sponsors of the League.”

That wasn't the only announcement Saturday morning as the league said it would be reintroducing an all-star game. The game will be held next year in July in Edmonton and then again in 2020.

The rebranding and all-star games are an effort to attract players to the league and bring more recognition to Canadian baseball.

The WMBL was created back in 1975 when the Southern Baseball League and the Northern Saskatchewan league merged to create the Saskatchewan Major Baseball League. The name was changed to the Western Major Baseball League in 2000.

The WMBL currently features 12 teams in two divisions, the Alberta and Saskatchewan divisions, which both feature six teams.
