With their season now concluded, the Home Hardware Midget ‘AAA’ Legionnaires hosted their annual Awards Banquet earlier this week.

In a season which saw plenty of ups and downs, including having the Legionnaires compete with and defeat the top teams in the Saskatchewan Midget ‘AAA’ Hockey League, but also lose to teams below them in the standings, it was the consistency of their lone graduating player that that stole the show at the awards.

Defenseman Zach Ziegler was named the team’s Most Valuable Player, as well as Best Defenseman and the unanimous pick for Players’ Choice Award.

"I thought I developed a lot," Ziegler said following the banquet.

"Darren and Guy have done lots for me this season and I appreciate everything they have done. I think they not only developed me skill-wise, but also as a leader and as a person."

Although he has now played his last game with the Legionnaires, Ziegler feels the team is very close to competing with the best in the SMAAAHL.

"We were in 18 games that we lost by one goal, so if we bear down a little bit more and get some of those wins, we are in playoffs," he said.

"Hopefully next year we can get a couple of those wins and get into playoffs."

Rookie defenseman Christian Riemer also had a good night at the awards picking up a pair of honours.

Riemer was named the team’s Rookie of the Year and Most Improved Player.

Picking up 54 points in 44 games, Broncos’ prospect Ethan Regnier finished as the team’s top scorer.

The Coaches Choice Award was given to Owen Ozar, while Kersey Reich was the Academic Player of the Year with a 92 percent average.
