RCMP officers are investing the scene of the fatal SJHL Humboldt Broncos bus crash that happened Friday evening when a semi-trailer collided with the bus while the team was on their way to a game in Nipawin.

Investigators confirmed that there were 29 people were on the bus at the time of the collision, including the driver.

RCMP were notified of another death bringing the total to 15 people that have died as a result of the collision. Fourteen people were sent to a hospital with injuries.

RCMP said in a news release that they are not confirming the identity of the victims at this time and that they are working with their partner agencies to ensure families are notified and the appropriate supports are provided to families and others who are impacted by the incident.

The semi-trailer was travelling westbound on Highway 335 when it collided with the bus travelling northbound on Highway 35.

The driver, the lone occupant of the semi-trailer was not injured.

Curtis Zablocki is the assistant commissioner with the Saskatchewan RCMP. He spoke at a press conference Saturday afternoon. The presidents of the Humboldt Broncos and SJHL, and the Mayor of Humboldt also spoke at the press conference.

Zablocki said the investigation will be looking at all aspects of the crash to figure out what happened.

"The driver of the semi-trailer tractor unit is not in custody," said Zablocki. "As part of the process of the investigation, the driver was detained initially. Our investigative processes were implemented and the driver has subsequently been released. He has also been provided with some mental health and wellness assistance."

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Zablocki said a number of avenues need to be considered such as road and weather conditions, the condition of the driver and mechanical conditions.
