In 30 days, 30 people lost their lives on Saskatchewan highways.  If you factor in the previous seven months, the number of deaths is four times higher.

These accidents are a result of alcohol, speed and distracted driving.  But the RCMP's officer in charge of traffic services admits it's hard to class any of those causes as "accidents."

"I do not remember the last time one of my investigators returned from a scene and told me what he attended was truly an accident," said Inspector Andy Landers.

Landers doesn't understand why safe driving messages aren't sinking in, saying most of us think we're good people and bad things don't happen to good people.

"Bad things do happen if they expose themselves to unacceptable levels of risk."

In an effort to reduce these preventable deaths, Landers says an enhanced enforcement project is taking place all over the province this long weekend.  The focus will be on highways that officers expect to be the busiest -- Highways 1, 16, 7 and 11.
