Last week the Shaunavon and District Music Festival Association held their annual music festival.

The 84th rendition of the festival featured 100 students ranging from as young as six perform over four days.

Nancy Phillips, president of the Shaunavon and District Musical Festival Association, said the event was a success.

“It was wonderful,” she said. “We had a very successful music festival. We had students that came from Bracken, Climax, Frontier, Gull Lake, Shaunavon, and Swift Current this year. I think everyone was really positive and thinks that music is just a wonderful thing to take part in.”

Phillips says that they were expecting fewer students this year as they had some seniors move on.

“The numbers were quite a bit higher than what we were expecting them to be,” she said. “We added the Monday evening and kind of overlapped on Wednesday, so we were quite pleased with everything.”

Phillps said that they had a lot of young students which was great to see.

“It’s very, very encouraging to see all the young participants come out and sing their songs and play their piano, and say their poems,” she said. “It’s just very encouraging to see them.”

The four-day event kicked off with musical theatre, followed by voice and speech arts, and wrapped up with piano and the final concert.

At the final concert, they handed out 35 scholarships ranging from $25 to $200.

Phillips added that they had two provincial recommendations from the adjudicators which she said is always an exciting thing.
