Portraits of Honour, a mural with the faces of the 157 Canadian soldiers killed in the Afghanistan mission painted by Dave Sopha (foreground), was on display in Swift Current on August 29, 2011.

Perhaps the biggest impact the attacks on September 11, 2001 had on Canada was our military's inclusion in the invasion of Afghanistan.

It cost Canada the lives of 157 soldiers, one diplomat and one journalist, and left many soldiers with life-altering injuries.

But after five years, Canada's combat mission in Afghanistan ended in July.

Frontier's Drew Fossum was a Bombardier with the First Royal Canadian Horse Artillery when he served in Afghanistan. He says that Canada has made its contribution to the combat mission and that we don't need to be there any longer:

Canadians had been working towards completion of the combat mission since Parliament voted in 2008 to end the mission by July 2011.
