While Saskatchewan voters will choose their next government in a month's time, our neighbours to the west elected a new Premier yesterday.

Alison Redford won a provincial leadership vote for Alberta's Progressive Conservative Party, and in turn becomes the Premier-Designate to take over for the resigning Ed Stelmach.

Redford was justice minister in Stelmach's cabinet and she will be the first woman to sit in the premier's chair in Alberta.

Her win comes after eight months of campaigning to replace Stelmach. She beat out campaign front-runner Gary Mar and former deputy premier Doug Horner on the final ballot.

Redford, who is 46 years old, was born in British Columbia, but moved to Calgary at an early age, and holds a law degree from the University of Saskatchewan.

In her victory speech at a conference hall in Edmonton last night, Redford said the province's PC membership has voted for change, and things will be done differently once she is sworn in to replaced Stelmach, saying teachers will be put back to work and health care access will be better.

Redford added she was thinking about her mother as the results rolled in... she died suddenly in the final days of the campaign.
