It's National Drowning Prevention Week and Fairview Pool in Swift Current is diving right into the campaign, putting on activities for the public throughout the week.

Fairview's aquatic superintendent Melissa Shaw said they're glad to join the national cause, especially with Swift Current having water around it, "not only with the Swift Current Creek, but the Saskatchewan Landing, Lake Pelletier and Duncairn Dam."

"Fairview Pool is going to be running special games and activities every afternoon throughout the week - so Monday through Friday from 2 p.m. to five p.m.," said Shaw. "We'll be doing about three to five games, depending on the day, and there'll be prizes and fun things to do."

Shaw said they want people to be aware of their aquatic surroundings, but more so of their abilities in the water.

"It includes boating safety, being cautious when you're fishing, even from the shoreline, and for little guys, making sure you're staying within arms' reach - even in those backyard pools that we're all enjoying because of the heat right now," she said.

"On average Saskatchewan sees about 20 drownings per year. And those are fatal drownings. It doesn't include any near misses or serious injuries that result from that," Shaw said. "So our goal across the country as the Lifesaving Society of Canada is to try to bring that down to zero. Nationwide about 400 people drown annually."

Shaw also said enrollment in swimming lessons at the outdoor pool is "on par for what [they] see every year." They still have one more two-week session of lessons coming up people can sign up for.
