A busy month in April for the police and speeders on Saskatchewan roadways.

Nearly 5,000 tickets for speeding and aggressive driving were issued last month according to the Saskatchewan Government Insurance (SGI) during their monthly traffic safety spotlight which focused on speeding.

Tyler McMurchy, the manager of media relations with SGI, said this was the first time since 2014 their traffic safety spotlight took aim at speeding.

"Speeding is definitely an issue, there is a lot of people doing it," he said was one of the reasons they chose speeding as their focus. "When we saw the numbers of convictions for speeding in a single year in Saskatchewan there were more than 124,000 convictions of speeding of all kinds. That tells us speeding is clearly an issue for all people."

McMurchy added that with the departure of the winter weather in April that might have led to some of the 4,873 tickets for excessive speed and aggressive driving.

"April tends to bring out the fast speeds in people," he said. "This isn't the highest number (ticket-wise) for speeding in a single month, but it certainly is on the high side and higher than we'd like considering we did spend a fair amount of time telling people speeding is the traffic safety spotlight focus for the month of April."

As of May 1 speeding ticket prices increased by $30 and the km/hr charge for travelling in excess of the posted speed doubled.

The three other major driving infractions reported by SGI during April included 516 distracted driving offences (426 for cellphone use), 269 impaired driving offences (including 265 Criminal Code charges), and 323 offences regarding seatbelts/child car seats.
