schafer state of city

A contentious proposed commercial land annexation goes to a public forum in Swift Current tonight.

The City is looking to annex land along Highway 1 west to Lac Pelletier Trail despite objections from the Rural Municipality.

"We're going to take a very professional approach," said Swift Current Mayor Jerrod Schafer, "We're going to deal with a number of concerns that we think RM residents would have and we think landowners would have (about) being annexed and we're going to make sure that we address that. We're going to be there to hear people's thoughts and concerns..

Schafer believes he is prepared for most ratepayer concerns.

"We're trying very hard to address them," Schafer added. "We worked very hard the last number of years to show that we care about growth and we care about residents and businesses, not just within the boundaries of Swift Current but in the entire region. This is more about working with everyone involved rather than just arbitrarily doing something."

The two sides have traded letters on the subject.

Tonight both will have their say, but ratepayers will also be able to voice their opinions between 4 and 6 pm at the Credit Union iPlex auditorium.
