Today is the first day of the Saskatchewan Abilities Council Awareness Week in the City of Swift Current.

The proclamation for the week of September 3rd to 9th was made at city council on August 28.

Regional Director for the Saskatchewan Abilities Council Kimi Duzan was on hand to make a presentation for the proclamation.

"It means so much to have that week proclaimed by city council and the mayor," she said. "They support us every day of the year, every week of the year and they take special attention to show their support for the work we do helping open doors for people with disabilities in the community."

Joining Duzan at council was Nolan, who participated in the Youth Employment Program (YEP) - a new Swift Current initiative created on April 1.

Nolan spent the summertime working at the Chinook Golf Course where he worked a multitude of jobs on the grounds and inside the restaurant.

He also earned his Serve It Right Saskatchewan enabling him to serve alcoholic beverages.

Multiple events are planned throughout the week beginning on Tuesday morning with a flag raising ceremony at city hall.

A BBQ lunch is scheduled for Thursday in Market Square and rounding out the week of activities is a grand re-opening on Friday at the Saskatchewan Abilities Council headquarters in Swift Current.

"We want to invite people into our facility to show them, we've painted, we've refreshed and I think we're refreshed our imagine," Duzan said. "We've also refreshed our building and we want it to say 'come on in community and have a look.'"
