Saturday afternoon the Swift Current Fight Club held their annual Spar-O-Thon at the Swift Current Boxing club, but this year it had a sweet twist.

This year's event did not only see the members of the boxing club spend three minutes sparing against one another for every 20 dollars they raised but also featured a bake sale that was donated from some of the families involved with the fight club.

Nick Habscheid runs the Counterpunch boxing club in the Swift Current Fight Club and said that this year's event went really well.

"We raised about 600 dollars," he said. "That money was going towards mats for this facility so we can do a little bit of wrestling and run some other programs."

Habscheid that he is hoping the money can also help them for when they host provincials later this year.

"We are also kind of looking to get some money to kick start provincials," he said. "We are going to be hosting them December 8th and 9th at the rec centre, so we need a little bit of money to kick start that and help us with finances for that."

The fight club runs programs every weekday and has about 60 members.

Habscheid said that not only does the Spar-O-Thon raise money for the facility but it also allows them to get some practice in.

"It's good to set get some money out of it, but at the same time we get a lot of practice in just fighting each other," he said. "You have a crowd, so it helped you prepare for an actual fight when there are people their and camera's going off. It's a great fundraiser that we do that benefits us both financially and physically."

Habscheid said this year was a little different than others as they coincided their event with the opening of Market Square.

"The plan this was Market Square. We wanted to get some people in from there, and we were thinking of food originally, but we decided to go with a bake sale so we tried to raise a little bit more money from the bake sale and tons of families that help out with this club decided to held bake."

He added that all the money raised will go into the club and helping with the mats.
