Within the past year, the Chinook School Division was involved in a data privacy breach.

According to a statement on the Chinook website, on February 4, 2020, the Chinook School Division proactively reported a breach of privacy to the Saskatchewan Information and Privacy Commissioner that a database setting was accidentally switched, causing some data to be made accessible instead of private, for a period of 36 hours.

The Saskatchewan Information and Privacy Commissioner report revealed that the information was accessible for 36 hours. Chinook confirmed that during the 36 hours, one entity accessed the records for two individuals through an IT security sweep.

Immediately following the discovery of the exposure, Chinook contacted the two individuals whose data was accessed and confirmed that the accessed data for those two individuals was not retained. No other information or data was accessed, copied, or retained at any time.

Chinook continues to monitor the database and in the 20 months since this incident, the data is still secure and has not been accessed, copied, or retained.

Chinook has also enhanced their software evaluation processes to ensure data remains protected in the future.

Swift Current Online reached out to the Chinook School Division regarding the incident and they provided no further comment.
