The Swift Current Broncos hosted a Bronco Strong night on Friday in support of the Humboldt Broncos, raising funds for a variety of charities.

Swift Current beat the Lethbridge Hurricanes 5-4 in overtime while dawning the special Bronco jerseys made by former captain Taylor Vause that had several unique features on the uniform tying Swift Current and Humboldt together.

Broncos Sales and Events Manager Ryan Gobeil said that Swift Current and Humboldt organizations both have a lot in common including the same name, tragic bus crashes, and history of the teams.

"We felt it was fitting to do a tribute, but we also felt it would be fitting to reach out to Humboldt and see if they were interested in participating and they were," he said. "I think it added some meaning, we're proud and happy to have worn the same uniforms that Humboldt will be wearing and we look forward to seeing them in the threads as well."

Humboldt will use the jersey designed by Vause as a third jersey for the remainder of the year.

The jerseys Swift Current wore were auctioned off with money raised from them, merchandise sales, and raffle tickets combining to generate $28,750 in funds that was split between STARS Air Ambulance ($23,500), The Fav Foundation ($1,750), Hockey Give Blood ($1,750), and The Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association ($1,750).

"Happy with the amount, I don't know if I'd say surprised," Gobeil said. "I think STARS and the other charities we had around are thing that people can relate to so I think when it comes down to that there are a lot of people who are willing to spend some of their hard earned money to support a good cause."

Gobeil said the event added extra value to him personally because his brother Morgan was a defenceman on Humboldt who was involved in the bus crash.

"I wouldn't say that was the reason we did it," he said. "We for sure put a lot of thought into it, I think after April 6 there was a lot of people that it brought up some emotions from them from 1986 and a lot of people wanted to do something, but by the time they were ready to do something or put some effort into that, that time had sort of passed around here. It was good for us, we felt that it was something important to our community so we wanted to make it important to our team as well."
