It was earlier this week that the Swift Current Broncos wrapped up one of their best seasons ever.

The Broncos won the Ed Chynoweth Cup to go along with the second-best record in the WHL (48-17-5-2) and second-best record in the team's history. The success on the ice led to the Broncos seeing their most successful season ever off of it.

Dianne Sletten is the director of business operations for the Broncos and says that although she doesn't have all the numbers yet, she anticipates that this last season has been their best season ever on the business side.

"This will certainly be probably the best year financially the organization has ever had," she said. "Every area of our business is up. Our souvenir sales are three times of what we budgeted for this year, so that gives you an idea of the concession, and the 50/50. People came, and they had fun, and they spent money, and we are extremely grateful for that."

Sletten said that one of the reasons for the great financial season was that the Broncos set a record high in attendance.

"We had 12 sellouts," she said. "That's never happened in the history of the Broncos. I think it was well over 90,000 people that attended. Even last year, we had I think six sellouts before the end of the regular season, and I think our overall attendance was just over 70,000. A huge increase for us in attendance, and then you add on all those playoffs games as well, which 13 we had at home, it was just an amazing year."

Sletten added that only having to travel to Moose Jaw and Regina during the first and second round of the playoffs, and playing a record 26 WHL playoff games, including 13 at home also helped them set new highs financially.

Sletten said that with the success of the Broncos, it also helped out the local businesses.

"What's nice is businesses outside of the Broncos were able to capitalize on this incredible run," she noted. "That's what we want. We are a community-owned team, and we definitely want the whole community to benefit when we benefit, and a number of businesses were able to do that, and that's just awesome for everybody."

The profits from this year, according to Sletten, will be used to improve the iPlex and help maintain the organization.

"We are looking at some potential partnerships with the City of Swift Current on some things to improve the facility," she said. "Most of that money will go to helping and maintaining the sustainability of the organization for many years to come. For the years that you don't have, three, four rounds of playoffs. That money is huge for us as a community-owned organization to manage properly and make sure we've got money there for those years that aren't as financially successful."

Sletten added that looking forward to next season; she anticipates another great campaign, business-wise.

"We are certainly anticipating another good year on the business side. The excitement was there, and we've worked hard to build that excitement both on the ice and off the ice in terms of our game-day experience and what fans can expect when they are here," she said. "It's amazing in the playoffs in the whole last half of the year. I think for next year it's going to be just as fun."

The Broncos season isn’t entirely done yet, as Swift Current has their first game of the Memorial Cup on Saturday at 2 p.m. against the QMJHL champion Acadie-Bathurst Titan.
