A staple of bull riding showmanship for the past nine years, the Swift Current Broncos recently announced that they will not be hosting either an Xtreme Bulls or PBR Bull Riding events in 2020.

The bull riding events were used as fundraisers for the Swift Current hockey club for nearly a decade before they say the event became financially unviable.

The lack of attendance and interest lead to the Broncos being in the red last year.

Nathan MacDonald is the director of business operations with the Swift Current Broncos.

"With a lack of attendance, it made it fiscally challenging to look ahead to a standard that we would have wanted to."

To make the event viable, an attendance of 1,700 or 1,800 people was needed to cover costs. Attendance at last year's iteration was only 1,200, which MacDonald said made the event "too risky" to host in 2020.

Looking back to bull riding events held in the past, he added that some of the events were really successful.

He said that sponsors of the event have been understanding of the cancellation, and they haven't yet heard back from fans on the end of the stretch of bull riding programing.

The Broncos are still looking to continue a fundraiser for the team but aren't sure what to select just yet.

"[We'll] do some fundraising for the Broncos, but also do something that the community obviously values and enjoys and wants to participate in," MacDonald said. "We'll be looking at several options throughout the summer."

"I don't know if that means that there will be something that happens this summer, but certainly going into future years it's something we want to continue to do."

He said that they aren't ruling out the possibility of another bull riding event if it is financially viable.
