With the Thanksgiving long weekend approaching this weekend, CAA Saskatchewan is reminding drivers to be safe and smart on the roads.

Road trip travel has certainly become more popular this year so let's remember that our roads and highways will be congested due to the increase in traffic for this weekend.

Christine Niemczyk, Director of Corporate Communications for CAA Saskatchewan details the importance of making sure your vehicle is good to travel.

"You need to, first of all, make sure that your mechanical features and tires are ok on your vehicle. That is going to be the vehicle that gets you to and from home safely so make sure all mechanical features are in place, you've got good tires. Seat belts must be in working order and worn by all passengers including the driver. And children's car seats and booster seats should be correctly installed and give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination."

Niemczyk, reminds drivers to slow to 60 when necessary on the roads.

"Please slow to 60 km per hour when passing tow truck operators and first responders helping motorists on Saskatchewan highways. It is the law. Very important to slow down, move over when you see flashing lights. It really can be a matter of life and death."

Other safety tips include remembering to pack a roadside assistance kit, avoiding distracted driving, and making sure not to drive impaired.
