Wildfires ravaged parts of Saskatchewan in October, and now much of California is ablaze.

Fawn Grant is from Swift Current but she's now living in Ojai, California - northwest up the Pacific coast from Los Angeles.

Grant, who still has family in Swift Current, said she was initially evacuated from Ventura to Ojai, then evacuated from Santa Barbara.

"Now it's looking like the fire is creeping up into Santa Barbara area. But I think the Santa Ana winds are starting to die down, so hopefully we won't wind up having to evacuate again," she said.

While the fires are skipping back and forth uncharacteristically, and igniting on already-burned areas, Grant says they're safe, but the air quality is so poor they need masks to go outside.

The fires in Saskatchewan and Alberta claimed human lives, animal lives, and damaged a lot of land. It's a bit of a different set up in California, though, with a population almost forty times that of Saskatchewan.

"I think the thing that separates us from maybe the situation in Saskatchewan is that everything is so spread out in Saskatchewan, and here everything's very close together," said Grant. "So when a fire hits, it's hitting neighbourhoods immediately - new neighbourhoods, minute by minute. I'm pretty sure we haven't gotten more than two hours of sleep a night for the past three or four days."

Grant did say while everybody is absolutely gassed, there's a strong sense of community and spirits are good.
