The Centennial Wind Power Facility, located 25km southeast of Swift Current, is nearing six years of operation.

Since it began producing green energy for the province in March of 2006, SaskPower has been very happy with the facility. Judy May, Vice-President of Corporate Relations at the Crown Utility, says the facility has been running at 97% of their expectation of how much electrical generation they would like to acquire from the facility, adding that running at 97% is considered to be exceptionally good performance.

May notes we have very good wind regimes in the southwest, saying for wind generation, they are able to get a higher capacity factor, which means a higher proportion of time over which the wind facility is predicted to run.

That may factor into plans to expand Saskatchewan's wind power generation by 175 megawatts. Currently, the Centennial Facility is rated at 150MW which is enough to power 69,000 homes.

When the facility was built, it took 200,000 man-hours to construct and 12 full-time positions were created.
