Principal Bryan Braun addresses the students at Central School

Early in the voting for the Majesta Trees of Knowledge campaign, Swift Current's Central School is out in front.

"Saskatchewan is really behind is right now," said spokesperson Shantal Roszell. "They are supporting us and have moved us (from 8th) all the way to 1rst."

If they win the school will get $20,000 towards an outdoor classroom.

"We want to get students more inquiry based, more active in their learning," said Principal Bryan Bruan. "This is certainly a great way to do this... through the planting, through the gardening, students will have the opportunity to be in touch with their environment."

One grade five student told a media kick-off event Tuesday what that would mean for the students: "In the outdoor classroom I will have a space to learn and grow and see what Mother Nature has to give to us to enjoy... and I will give back ten times more."

A grade four added his thoughts: "In the outdoor classroom I will learn (about) and see new plants that I never have before. I can learn about the environment while enjoying and respecting it."

Even with early success, Central School doesn't have time to get complacent.

"There is still 40 days left in voting," Roszell said . "We need everyone to vote from now on and the more votes we can get the better."
