A plan by the City of Swift Current to annex commercial land west of the city has hit a snag.

The City recently received a letter of objection from the Rural Municipality of Swift Current on their resolution to annex the land along Highway 1 up to Lac Pelletier Trail.

Mayor Jerrod Schafer said they're disappointed and shocked by the development, especially with the progress the two councils have made over the last year, “Looking at things like our water agreement and some of the discussions we've had on planning for growth. It certainly came as a surprise mostly because we received a letter in January stating that go ahead the Saskatchewan municipal board. We can't agree on compensation, of course if you look at their meeting minutes its in January meeting minutes as well. So certainly a surprise, shock, and disappointing for us.”

While it is a shocking development, Schafer adds that they'll continue to make their case for annexing the land to help accomodate the growth of the city, "Were gonna obviously make some efforts to make sure that any misconceptions and that people know our true intent is really to do the best thing for growing this region and thats truly our objective here.”

Schafer adds the objection will delay the annexation process, and an open house meeting will be held at the end of May.
