One highlight of the 2012 Swift Current Municipal Budget was the addition of a new RCMP School Liason Officer for the Comprehensive High School.

Councillor Tim Bugera had been requesting one of these officers for quite some time, and was happy that one is now coming in.

"We've done lots of work to move forward with the School Liason Officer Program, and lots of homework to find out what it's all about," Bugera said. "We've invited other communities here to Swift Current, other liason officers to talk to us to gather information on what the program is all about, and I think we just all felt that it was time to move forward on the liason officer position."

Bugera says he believes the liason officer will be an effective tool to help with problems with drugs and bullying in the school, educate students about these problems, and provide some security for students and staff. He also hopes the officer will come to council meetings every now and then to update the public on the progress of the program.

He adds this will be a pilot project lasting up to three years starting from this fall.
