Swift Current City Council approved a new agreement with Public Safety Canada that will see the RCMP continue to provide policing services to the community until 2032. Policing is coming at a higher cost to the city, with their share increasing to 90 per cent as a result of the population exceeding 15,000 people.

Deputy Chief Administrative Officer Tim Marcus said they are going to look at finding ways to make policing more cost-effective through a feasibility study this year, “It's tended to be completed by the end of the year. It's just a review to determine the most cost effective way of delivering services to the community.”

Marcus added the increase costs to the city are close to $600,000 per year with the chang in the cost-sharing model.

One of the major changes in the agreement is that the RCMP must consult the city if they need to perform capital upgrades worth over $150,000, “They'll present financial projections for the years going forward which would include their projections on any capital expenditures and certainly anything that would be charged to the city over on hundred and fifty thousand they will consult with the city,” Marcus said.

The agreement was approved at a special council meeting on Thursday, and will take effect April 1.
