Icy and slippery roads have been a common sight in Swift Current this winter (File Photo)

We've done our fair share of slipping and sliding around our local streets and sidewalks.

However city crews have been doing their best to battle the icy conditions experienced this winter, through the utilization of sanding trucks and attempting to quickly remove any snowfall we've received.

"In terms of budget and snow removal, it sure has cut down on the cost when you don't have the snow to remove but at the same time the ice makes it tough to deal with" says Manager of Swift Current Public Works, Greg Parsons.

Parsons' department has tried to deal with the ice before it has become an issue, but has had some difficulty in keeping up with the melting snow and freezing temperatures we've become accustomed to the last several weeks. "We've tried to do some snow removal. I know there wasn't a lot there at times but we tried to get some of it removed so that we could have avoided this ice problem here. With the warm weather though, it makes it kind of tough," Parsons says.

In the event of snowfall or freezing rain, the City has a plan in place that sees primary and arterial roads and streets cleared and sanded first. Secondary streets are then covered as quickly as possible. The full details of this plan and a map can be viewed by clicking here.
