Swift Current is upgrading its fleet of sanding trucks, replacing their 2003 T5 Sanding Truck to a new model and then adding a tandem axle sander and plow truck to the fleet.
"We are now responsible for some of Highway 4, now known as Memorial Drive, and that needs a different type of truck to carry out operations on it," said City Engineering Director Mac Forster. "As well, there's just more area to do, so we needed a third unit to guarantee that we can get our sanding units out in an efficient time. This will greatly enhance our ability to get out earlier and get more roadways covered before traffic picks up in the early hours of the morning."
The replacement truck will cost $180,000 in this year's budget and the additional vehicle will cost $250,000 in the 2013 city budget.
Forster adds they will also evaluate the need for additional staff, saying they will juggle the crews the city has and will be adding more as the need warrants.
