It's a major cash infusion for Swift Current's Lyric Theatre.

City Council voted in favor 4-2 to provide the Lyric  with a conditional $250,000 grant over the next two years.

Councillor Denis Perrault was one of two who voted against the motion, and says while he supports the Lyric, he was a little uneasy with making such big spending promises for the 2012 and 2013 budgets.

Councillor Gord Budd, who supported the motion, says if they don't contribute to fixing the theatre up, it may cost them anyway if the Lyric were to come back to the City and be in need of demolition.

The city grant is conditional on the Lyric receiving matching funds from the federal Building Communities through Arts and Heritage Legacy Grant.

If successful the federal grant would match as much as $500,000. The Southwest Cultural Development Group is currently in the process of raising the remaining funds.
