Bits and pieces of Swift Current's former hospital and schools could be part of the City's roadways in the near future.

Last night Swift Current city council agreed to have all of the concrete and asphalt at the City's East Landfill crushed into a reusable product.

Mitch Minken, the general manager of infrastructure and operations with the City of Swift Current, said having the products recycled will free up lots of space within the landfill.

"Landfills are about airspace," he said. "When you bring some material into the landfill it costs money, right now it's at $90 per tonne. By removing this concrete out of useable area, then we can use it for waste that will come in and generate that $90 per tonne of revenue."

City council awarded Rockcrusher Concrete & Asphalt Recycling Inc. the job for $660,000, which includes cleaning up and recycling the 'concrete field' (10,000-15,000 tonnes of mostly concrete spread over 7 acres), 40,000 tonnes of concrete, and 20,000 tonnes of asphalt.

The City estimates they can make $400,000 in revenue by having the 'concrete field' cleaned up and they will save half the price on concrete and asphalt by having the materials made into reusable product, instead of having to purchase it brand new.

"Good uses for the asphalt-aggregate are in laneways where we have some issues with rutting, it's good use in yards, good use on other road beds... There is lots of use for the crushed asphalt," Minken said. "The crushed concrete becomes sub-base material, so that's a little bit more difficult use because it's really a building block of a roadway... As we go forward and we need to build new roads and they're needed we will have that material for building those roads."

The City has highlighted four roadways that could use the crushed concrete, Sydney Street West, Adams Street, Waker Road, and Battleford Trail West.
