Well it's official now, the City of Swift Current will be increasing its electrical rates.

Following the lead of SaskPower, the City will apply a 3.5 per cent system average electric rate increase as of March 1.

Mitch Minken, general manager of infrastructure and operations with the City of Swift Current, said the rate increase is like a domino effect.

"We just mirror the rates that SaskPower provide us and just pass them on," he said.

Consumers - residential, small commercial, and medium commercial customers - will actually see hike of 3.6 per cent on their bills.

"This particular rate increase when they brought it out there was some minor adjustments made," Minken said. "Which resulted in a slightly larger increase in for residential, small and medium-sized commercial businesses."

Large commercial customers will see the 3.5-per-cent increase.

Minken also noted the City records a surplus on it's Light & Power, which the funds are used towards capital projects within Swift Current.
