The average lifespan of a concrete sidewalk is 40 to 50 years. Some sidewalks in Swift Current are outlasting that timeframe, but for the ones that aren't, the cost to repair and replace them is going up.

City council approved the 2012 paving and sidewalk contract at Monday's meeting, and it indicates a 5% increase on unit costs for building and repairing sidewalks, but the budget to repair streets and walks has not dramatically increased.

"We've just been literally doing a little bit less with the money, or we've been able to find other ways to stretch the budget out to get the work done that's really needed to be done," said City Engineering Director Mac Forster.

Forster added the city has been working with other municipalities to explore new methods and materials to extend the life of infrastructure.
