The City of Swift Current is going with the least-expensive proposal for the 2018 asphalt and concrete program.

The total budget for the projects is $1,940,000. Last night council agreed to go with Mobile Paving Limited - whose bid was 18.7 per cent lower than the second-cheapest bid.

The projects could wind up costing less, depending on how much work is done. But the City says it won't exceed the budgeted amount.

Around half the budget money would be spent on paved street and sidewalk rehabilitation, and half on property development.

The City splits the cost 50-50 for frontage sidewalk replacement, but covers replacement of flankage and non-frontage.

On Monday, Councillor Ryan Plewis was grateful to conractors for placing bids, since the projects may not wind up being as much as the budget amount. He noted that when there's an economy of scale, it might make it less profitable for unit of work done for a contractor if there's less total work.
