The City fights rising flood waters along Swift Current Creek in Ashley Park last spring

The City of Swift Current is taking steps to prepare for any future flooding, engaging Golder Associates to do a flood hazard mapping study.

"It really will give us an idea of what properties within the city are really susceptible to flooding," said City Engineering Director Mac Forster. "We'll determine some actions to either protect those areas through some sort of flood control device like a berm or a dike, or maybe simply to make those undevelopable areas. We are aware that there was a study being done by the Federal Government to study flooding along the creekbank right from the Duncairn Dam through the city. It did not include the city, so we're piggy-backing on that agreement to get the consultant that's doing that flood study to complete it within the city boundary.

This will be the first flood reduction and flood mapping study for Swift Current since 1981.

"Since those 30 years have passed, there's been a lot of development within areas alongside the creek throughout the city which may have impacted the topography along those areas." Forster added.

The study will cost the city up to $180,000 to complete.
