earth hour

The City of Swift Current will join the rest of the world tonight for Earth Hour.

At 8:30pm this evening, millions of people will switch their lights off for one hour to send a message about taking action on climate change.

"We're actually joining other cities across the province, and we're just going to make sure that facilities that we don't have booked or any programming at, we're going to make sure that our lights are off," said Swift Current Mayor Jerrod Schafer. "We just ask our community to maybe participate as well and show there is concern and interest in doing what we can to protect the planet."

Schafer added that many residents are concerned about climate change: "I think there's a demand out there from residents that they want more options, they want us to be a little more environmentally responsible, and the reality is it's important that we are."

More than 5,200 cities and towns in 135 countries worldwide switched off their lights for Earth Hour 2011.
