The local sports scene lost a key behind the scenes member over the weekend.

Earl Monkman was a fixture at numerous event volunteering with the Swift Current Broncos, minor hockey, and the Indians ball club. He passed away suddenly this weekend.

Former coach of the Swift Current Indians and current board member, Harv Martinez worked with Earl during his years with the ball club and says it was a sobering moment when he learned of his passing. "We were very saddened by the news. Earl had been a long time Swift Current Indians baseball organization member and volunteer. He was just one of those guys always willing to lend a hand and do a lot of behind the scenes stuff," Martinez says.

Martinez remembered Earl fondly for a number of things, including his eagerness and willingness to step into a variety of roles. "He wasn't the guy doing the giant enormous things," he told us. "He was the guy that was doing the small stuff that most people probably didn't want to do. His legacy will certainly live on in many areas of this community."

Jordan Wall, the Director of Business Operations with the Swift Current Broncos says the sudden passing caught the organization off-guard as well. "It was pretty shocking on our end. We heard about it earlier in the week, it was definately tough around the office just waiting to see what happened and hoping for things to be good but it didn't go the way everyone wanted," Wall says. "There's a lot of people in the office that had worked with Earl for a number of years and some of our newer staff had worked with him just the last couple of years, but he made an impact on everybody."

A memorial service for Earl Monkman will be held on Friday, January 20th at 2:00 pm from the Trailview Alliance Church.
