With the warm weather this month, the City of Swift Current has been in full swing when it comes to construction.

One of the many projects the City has going on this year is the ongoing moving of the overhead power lines to underground.

Mitch Minken is the general manager of infrastructure and operations for the City of Swift Current and said that construction is going well on the power line project.

"This is kind of Phase 1," he said. "Phase 1 of the project is to get all the duct work done. We will spend the spring using the contractor that we have to put the duct in place from all the service locations right to all the building. We will follow along later installing all the electrical cables and equipment."

Minken added that they are two-thirds of the way through the duct installation.

"Another two weeks to go and we will have completed this year's installation of the ductwork, which will take us from Chaplin Street to North Railway and over someway west to the RCMP building," he said. "Two and a half blocks are what we are working on this year."

Minken said after they finish construction this year, they still have a long way to go.

"We'll complete this project in another three years. This is Year 4 of what will be a total of seven years," he said. "We will continue to install cables and cut over businesses to the new system in the blocks we did last year. We are hoping that by this fall we will be able to remove some poles and really show what the project is going to look like when we are done."

Minken added that the budget for the project is $500,000 a year.
