Highway Construction

Construction zone enforcement last Thursday by the Southwest Region RCMP Traffic Services on Highway 1 and 11th Avenue overpass proved busy as multiple charges were laid.

Sergent Craig Cleary with the F Division Communication Unit says RCMP were present from 4:30pm-7:00pm and explains the charges laid.

"During that time they laid eight charges. Most of which fortunately were not relating to excessive speed within the construction zone. There were such charges as incorrect trailer hitch connection, driving without due care and attention as well as six seatbelt infractions, he said."

Sergent Cleary adds that finding these infractions is a cause for concern and also articulates the need for them to be out there not only for awareness but also for enforcement.

Although no charges were laid for excessive speed within the construction zone, Sergent Cleary reminds drivers to slow down when approaching these areas.

"People are working within those construction zones to try and make our highways better so that we can use them and we can be safe while we are using them. We as the users of the highway need to do our part to ensure the safety of those people who are trying to make our roads safer as well," Cleary said.

Drivers are reminded to slow down to 60 km/h when passing highway workers and vehicles as well as tow truck drivers and emergency services workers.
