Swift Current wants the Centennial Celebrations of 2014 to be a homecoming.

Council has approved $20,000 not previously in their budget to cover marketing and social media funding for the committee this year.

"We just need a little seed money," said Councillor Gord Budd, who is on the city's centennial committee. "Our centennial is in 2014, but there's a lot of work that we have to do beforehand. We want to start getting active in social media, so we're going to set up a webpage, we'll be on Twitter, we'll be on Facebook, and all this takes a little bit of seed money to accomplish."

Budd hopes the active online pressence will encourage current and former residents to make plans for celebrating in Swift Current in 2014: "We're hoping to draw people from near and far," he added. "There's a lot of people that used to live in Swift Current over the years that have moved away, so we want to get the word out there. We want people to be able to plan well in advance to make Swift Current a destination for their 2014 holidays."

Since the money wasn't budgetted, council plans to cover the $20,000 with unused operating funds from a city department or by dipping into reserves.
