A call to action is out by Canadian Blood Services as their supplies are noted as being critically low.

Katherine Wasylynka is the Canadian Blood Services' territory manager for southern Saskatchewan, and says that blood donations are the most direct way people can give back to their communities and the province - something she has learned first-hand from working in clinics.

"The need for blood is constant - it's every day. It's not just for a car accident or trauma, people rely on blood for cancer treatments, surgeries, transplants, etc. We really do need blood every minute of every day."

Wasylynka also explains that while all blood types are essential, some are even more vital than others.

"All blood types are needed, but specifically Type O's right now are needed. That's because O- is our universal donor and O+ can give to all of the positive blood types," she said.

For Swift Current specifically, Wasylynka hopes the generosity continues during a crucial time, as today marks the last day to donate blood in the southwest until August 28th and 29th.

"Swift Current has always stepped up to the plate, and our mobile clinics out in the area collect very, very well. I'd just like to say thank you to everyone from Swift Current."

The blood clinic runs today at Bridgeway Community Church from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
