The city of Swift Current and the Swift Current Curling Club inked an agreement earlier this week for the next two years.

The deal was approved by city council on Monday night and will see the curling club pay the City $75,000 for the 2021-22 season and $76,500 for the 2022-23 season.

"The Swift Current Curling Club has had a long and successful partnership with the city of Swift Current moving from the Stockade building to the Innovation Credit Union iPlex with renovations that included a new eight-sheet curling rink in 2007," the city of Swift Current's General Manager of Community Services Jim Jones said.

Part of the agreement entails an extra $10,000 payment annually from the club for the next seven or fewer years to cover the debt owed to the City.

"Prior to an agreement in 2019, the curling club was in was in arrears to the city of Swift Current in the amount of $103,860.80," Jones told city council. "A dedicated re-calibration by all members of the current curling club led by president Melody Robertson and club manager Chris Haichert has seen the club grow moderately in numbers and pay down their debt over the past three years to $63,860.80."

Jones added that under Haichert and Robertson the curling club membership has grown the past two years for the first time in a decade going from around 250 members in 2019 to over 300 this past season.
