After ten days of tournament action and the best under 17 hockey players in the world hitting the ice, the World U17 Hockey Challenge is all wrapped up.

The event ended last week when Russia took home the gold medal. The event featured both Medicine Hat and Swift Current as the hosts and three Canadian teams, and teams from the US, Russia, Sweden, Finland, and the Czech Republic.

Liam Choo-Foo, the co-chair of the host organizing committee, said overall the event went really well.

"We had lots of great feedback from those that attended. They felt the hockey was fast and exciting. In terms of operating, the tournament went really smoothly," he said. "We had good comments from Hockey Canada, the teams themselves and how they were treated, from the parents and players saying they felt it went really well. I think once again we were able to show that Swift Current can host world-class events."

Choo-Foo added that from the attendance standpoint, it was a disappointing tournament for the Swift Current side.

"We averaged just over 500 people per game. A total of 6,600 people attended and I think if there was one thing about it, that was probably the one that was somewhat disappointing."

Choo-Foo said one of the biggest highlights to him about the tournament was hospitality that the volunteers from the southwest showed to those visiting the city.

"Probably the one that sticks in the mind the most in talking with some of the families from Sweden and Finland, and even the Canadian families, was about how well our volunteers treated them and really were great ambassadors for the City of Swift Current."

Choo-Foo added that he hopes the event served as a good audition for Swift Current to host more events like the World U17 Hockey Challenge.
