The City of Swift Current declined the proposed budget for the Chinook Regional Library due to a discrepancy in how much they were willing to increase spending, and what the regional library was looking for.

Communities within the region vote, but Swift Current can veto a budget, as it's the largest contributor of funds.

City CAO Tim Marcus said they'd increase spending by 3 per cent from 2017, but the library wanted something around 8 to 10 per cent more.

"We asked them to change the amount to the amount that was in the budget, or come in and discuss prior to the meeting," said Marcus. "And they didn't contact the City to discuss that prior to the meeting, so the City officials voted 'no' because they felt if they voted 'yes' they were saying the City was committing to a number that they didn't have in their budget - or that was great than what they had in their budget."

The library is looking for an increase more in line with population growth.
