The City of Swift Current's Main Street program received a boost in funding earlier this week.

$60,000 spread out over seven Provincial grants were received, with the seventh being a partial grant.

Erin Gehl, Main Street Swift Current Coordinator, explains what the Main Street Program is acquiring grant funding for.

"The purpose of the program is to really just bring awareness to conserving our historic buildings downtown as well as engaging building owners to reinvest in their buildings. Also, it encourages everyone to recognize the value that heritage does bring to economic development for downtown cores," she said.

In fact, the latest downtown building to receive funding is an important one to Gehl.

"The Professional Building is the latest building that received dollars through this grant. We just think that one is a huge gem because it's right on the corner and people are going to see the work that's being done," she said.

The Professional Building received $20,000 in funding to be able to assist in its revitalization.

Gehl and other City employees in the Main Street program have expressed positive reactions from the program, which had already seen $40,000 in grant money approved by the Provincial government.

"We're very excited with the interest level that we've gained from building owners. We have a rich history in Swift Current which everyone is pretty much aware of, and to have the community behind a program that puts value on the historic interest and place that these buildings serve for us is great," she said.

Downtown businesses have had reason be excited as well in the Main Street Program as Optical Image, Sputtergotch Toy Company and the Lyric Theatre are among businesses to successfully receive funding as well.

The Main Street Program is provincially-based and delivered by the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport.
