The Clearwater Drive-in just outside Kyle

The future of the Clearwater Drive-In could be on the line.

Film companies are looking at stopping the production of film prints next year. That could mean the drive-in would require a costly conversion to digital in order to run any new films.

"If the whole cost of the conversion is not viable we would have to look at closing down the operation," said Clearwater Drive-in owner Denise Kelk. "Or if someone else wants to come in with the funds to do the conversion they certainly can purchase the property.

Converting to a digital projector could cost between $70,000 and $100,000.

While the future may be uncertain, the drive-in is on solid footing for now.

"We are busier all the time," Kelk said. "Every year we are seeing new people and interest generated. We would certainly like to see this operation continue for future generations."
