The Swift Current Senior Citizens' Activity Centre on Central Ave. North will no longer be host to games, music, or potlucks, as it's been sold.

The independently-operated senior centre will close at the end of the month, as the numbers of people that came out for activities has decreased considerably in recent years, according to Treasurer Bernie Sorenson.

For decades people over 50 gathered regularly for games of cards or other activities. Come October, games of cribbage will instead be played at the library.

The centre had a sale on Monday where they were getting rid of shuffleboards and other items they'd been using.

"The money we get for this will go into our fund for the time being, as long as we're a charitable organization it'll stay there for a while," said Sorenson. "And then it will be given away to different organizations. I guess we'll have to get a group together and decide which should be getting so much."

Sorenson said they'll be playing cribbage every two weeks at the library now, though they may change that to weekly meetings.

He recalled they used to have 10 tables of four people out for cribbage about seven or eight years ago, but as of late they've averaged just three tables.

"The attendance is dropping off immensely," said Sorenson. "Older people are passing on. Younger people... are supposed to be busy doing other things. And older people that had moved or had gone into homes and that, they had their own facilities, their own pool tables, their own shuffleboards, cards, whatever they wish."

Sorenson also said that while many seniors didn't drive, a lack of parking didn't help bring people out.

"The parking downtown here is terrible because now we have a taxi on front which is taking space all the time too, so people can't find a place to park - mind you a lot of old people don't drive cars anymore. It's just nice to have a place to park without getting a ticket."
