Appropriately timed with family literacy week, students and families of École Centennial school are currently taking part in the One Book - One School initiative.

Principal at École Centennial, Bryan Braun explains the program which has been in place since the beginning of this month.

"One Book-One School Initiative is something  that our school community council initiated. They purchased a book, The One And Only Ivan for each of our families and we set up a schedule for reading the book. Right now we are in the final week of that book."

The One and Only Ivan, is a book based on the true story of a gorilla who was purchased and put in a mall. The story is told from the perspective of Ivan the gorilla.

Braun explains the objective behind the initiative.

"This is really just to help us get the support of the parents and in terms of showing the parents how important it is that we emphasize and model good reading. It also was a way, we could as a school, we are a young community and learning from each other and so we have a common theme as were all reading the book The One And Only Ivan."

Along with the reading of the book, Braun says Ivan related activities have also been taking place for the students to participate in. One of these activities includes "Ivan Trivia" which is played as part of the morning announcements and students answer questions relating to the current sector of the book they are reading.

In terms of feedback regarding the initiative, Braun says all the parents he has talked to so far are very much enjoying the process.
