Swift Current's first ever Environmental Public Health Week is winding down today, but not without raising awareness within the community.

During this past Monday night's city council meeting a motion was passed proclaiming the week from September 24 to September 30.

"It's extremely exciting," Senior Public Health Inspector for the Cypress Health Region Bradford Giesbrecht said. "It's a really great opportunity for us to do this locally and to have these government organizations and municipalities recognize it. It's just super exciting and we're really appreciative of it."

The week has existed in Canada for 14 years now which is meant to shed light on the importance of public health professionals including public health inspectors, environmental health officers, and other environmental health occupations.

"(The week is for) looking back at what this profession has done for humans and especially here in Canada where we have been an organization for 103 years," he said. "It's also for us to celebrate each other and the things we do while promoting it to the general population and get the word out there about the good things environmental health professionals do across Canada."

On Tuesday the Canadian Institution of Public Health Inspectors - Saskatchewan Branch held their annual education conference for over 70 health inspectors across the province. Giesbrecht was one of the chairs for the event and said it was a nice opportunity for them (the public health inspectors) to get together and take part in some education and networking.

This year's theme was honouring traditions and inspiring innovation.
