Sunday afternoon the 36-annual Father's Day tradition of soapbox racing continued.

23 drivers from Swift Current, Moose Jaw and Medicine Hat raced down Central Avenue in the event hosted by the Swift Current Soapbox Racing Association.

Derek Jahnke, is the vice-president of the Swift Current Soapbox Racing Association, said that his year's racing went excellent.

"We had a very good turnout and drivers," he said. "We had one from Medicine Hat, one from Moose Jaw and just the fan support was incredible. We had more fans and more cars than we did last year."

Jahnke said it's awesome to see drivers come out from as far as Medicine Hat.

"We had drivers from Moose Jaw last year which was nice," he said. "This is the first time as far as I know that Medicine Hat has been involved especially for such a large population, they do have a soapbox club. Even to get one out and get the word out to try and build that club and expand the soapboxes would be great."

Jahnke said that the race was a great way to spend Father's Day.

"It was awesome seeing all the dads out there with there kids," he said. "Even the moms and grandparents there supporting the drivers was awesome to see."

Jahnke added that they like to host these races because it gives the kids a sense of pride.

"It's good for the kids and good for the parents to be involved. It's just a nice activity," he said. "All the cars are provided by the soapbox association. We keep them in conjunction with the parents and the kids to try and get as many people out doing some activity together. The kids get to form bonds with all the kids and be able to take pride in working on these cars. It's kind of a reflection of them out on the course. They put the time in and the cars they run. It's just pride for the kids more than anything."

Jahnke added that the soapbox association in Swift Current and in other areas in Saskatchewan is growing, something that he hopes continues.
