The City of Swift Current's Fire Chief Darren McClelland is on leave until the end of the year, as he receives cancer treatment.

McClelland was diagnosed with cancer in 2016, and last month he found out it had returned and spread.

City Chief Administrative Officer Tim Marcus said the two deputy fire chiefs Peter L'Heureux and Ryan Hunter will alternate weeks serving as fire chief.

A Go Fund Me campaign has raised over $70,000 towards an $80,000 goal as McClelland is receiving treatment in Mexico.

McClelland was named the replacement for Denis Pilon as fire chief this past spring.
