MC blizzard

Heavy snow hits Maple Creek on Monday (Photo submitted by Kim Reznechenko)

It's the first full day of spring, and winter ended with a major snowstorm for parts of the southwest yesterday.

Up to 30 centimetres of heavy, wet snow fell over communities near the Alberta Boundary, including Maple Creek, Leader and the Cypress Hills, and strong winds caused near-zero visibilities at times on the highways.

Travel was not recommended on highways around Consul and Maple Creek, and a long stretch of the Trans-Canada was blocked off from Piapot to Brooks, Alberta.

Road conditions are expected to get better today, but it's still a good idea to stay on top of the road and weather conditions before heading out... you can call the Highway Hotline at 1-888-335-7623, or click the road report link on Swift Current Online.
